SCOUT INSTRUCTORS SERIES - Meet Kelly
KELLY NEWTON
How long have you been teaching Yoga? I've been teaching yoga for about 4 years now, and at Scout for just under a year!
What is your favourite class to teach at Scout? So my favourite class style to teach at Scout is Open Flow, just because I love the creativity and being able to see my students' progress each class.
What is your favourite Yoga pose? At the moment, because it does change a lot, but my favorite yoga pose is Natarajasana, so Dancer's pose, but I love backbending, so pretty much any deep backbending is always at the top of the list!
What's your favourite thing about teaching? My favourite thing about teaching is just being able to connect with people, and you know my other job that I do is sitting at a desk and being on a computer so it' s really nice to be able to come in and actually spend time with people in person, and to be able to connect and hopefully make a little bit of an impact in their day.
What do you like to do when you’re not teaching? So when I' m not teaching, eating is probably one of the main things but also lots of movement. So I love to do Muay Thai, I love to practice Yoga, Pilates, I do Pole dancing as well as going to the gym, pretty much anything. I feel like I' m a very restless person.
Anything great you’ve been watching? Lately, I' ve definitely been like really trying to plow through a whole long list of movies that I' ve never seen before. So, probably the best one that I watched recently was Past Lives which is amazing, very very good.
What advice would you give to someone who is just starting with Yoga? So my advice to anyone who' s just starting yoga is to kind of park your expectations at the door of what you think your practice will be like, how your body will move, and just kind of let yourself get into the experience. So I think a lot of the time people come and they go, oh I' ve been practicing for three months, for six months, should I be able to do this pose? And the answer is not, we shouldn' t, you know, there' s no timeline for doing poses and I think we shouldn' t focus on that, just focus on kind of what the experience is like and how you feel and being able to get the most out of that at the end of the day.
