What is Therapeutic Yoga?

Kitty Reddington, one of our Scout yoga teachers who is certified in Yoga Therapy shares with us some insights about the therapeutic benefits of Yoga and how it might be beneficial for you.

Have you ever wondered why you feel so calm after a yoga class? Hint, it isn’t just the endorphins.

Even when you’re working hard, like in a Power Vinyasa class, you can sometimes leave a class feeling more balanced and with a sense of relaxation.

This is because yoga helps us tap into our nervous system. If you’re not familiar with this, think of it as the body’s command center. It’s not only responsible for movement, but also for internal systems, like digestion and breathing. When we practice yoga we can (usually) bring our system into balance, for example, by connecting our movement with the breath. This is why, even when it’s challenging, yoga can still calm us down.

If you can get these effects from a Vinyasa class, why try Therapeutic Yoga?

Yoga Therapy is an area of work that not many people know about or completely understand. So, let’s unpack that a little bit here.

As a Yoga Therapist, I predominantly work with clients one-on-one to address a variety of health issues – everything from anxiety to back pain. I describe it to people as a combination of counseling, yoga, and physiotherapy. It’s unique because it provides a holistic approach to managing health conditions.

Yoga Therapy is not about replacing modern Western medicine, but rather about enhancing it and giving individuals the tools and access they need to have more ownership over their own health and healing.

Yoga Therapy sessions can sometimes cost a lot, and right now, they, unfortunately, aren’t subsidized by Medicare or private health funds – that’s why I have distilled down some of the key components of Yoga Therapy into a short digestible workshop where individuals can start to learn more about balancing their nervous system and how the practices of yoga can help them in their day to day lives.

Having a regular yoga practice is important – but when you can’t make it to a class – I want you to have the tools to get those benefits in your home, while traveling, or in the middle of a busy workday.

In this first-of-its-kind Therapeutic Yoga Workshop, we will explore some of the healing practices you might experience in a Yoga Therapy session. This workshop is for anyone and everyone to start to tap into their inner world and find a way back to a full state of health.
